Jazz Foundation

Events

The Foundation has created opportunities for the local musicians through this programme as follows;

  • The number of new artists will be included in the performing lineups that would have been discovered through the Foundation’s event activation talent search programme in the buildup period.
  • The opportunities offered to newly discovered musicians who will participate in both concerts will lead to the production of new material of their own from the facilitated engagements they will have with producers and recording company executives.
  • Our track record is testimony of the number of capacity-building interventions that were funded by the proceeds of the events we’ve staged in the past, and this is the trend that we intend to continue building on;

Beneficiaries of some of our past events include:

  • Nhlanhla Mahlangu was identified by Stefon Harris (American vibraphone player and Head of the Manhattan School of Music in New York) to study in the US in the next semester after the performance at the Tshwane International Big Band Festival (2017 inaugural edition)
  • Themba Mkhize, who has won multiple SAMA and Daimler Benz Awards, had never written any sheet music. Through workshops culminating in performances at the Linder Auditorium, he has learnt to score his music. He can now read and write music.
  • Traditional South African music, such as Maskandi and isicathamiya, had never been scored. Through our concerts, various artists such as Madala Kunene, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Bhekumuzi Luthuli had learnt how to read the scores. Veteran artists conducted workshops to upskill Maskandi musicians.
  • The Previously Disadvantaged students of Gauteng Music Academy in Daveyton have benefitted from the annual workshops conducted through our events by various artists that were contracted by the JFSA, such as Yusef Lateef, Rufus Reed, Mary Stallings, Oppie Bellas, Ramon Valle, Pharoah Sanders etc. The students were taught the playing techniques of various instruments.
  • South African Roadies Association (SARA) students worked on some concerts as interns and learnt skills in technical equipment, artist hospitality, essential event management and backstage management/production.
  • We honoured and acknowledged one of SA’s musical legends Kippie Moeketsi, by financing and unveiling his memorial tombstone.
  • Donated funds to Glen Mafoko for the recording of his debut album.
  • Funding and facilitating Lesedi Ntsane’s study for a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in the USA.
  • The Foundation donated a signature George Benson Ibanez guitar to Prince Kupi during his performances with Bob Mintzer in South Africa.
  • Young Zim Ngqawana was, on his arrival in Jo’burg, given his most significant break to perform in a star-studded lineup by the JFSA to earn himself a passage to fame and subsequent headline artist status.
  • Marcus Wyatt and Carlo Mombelli were partly funded for their university studies by the JFSA.
